The Dam Spitallamm

The arch dam Spitallamm is 114 m high and 258 m long . It keeps back the enormous turquoise waters of Lake Grimsel: around 95 million m3 water are accumulated behind this impressive structure. The Lake Grimsel is with its volume and a length of 5.3 km the largest reservoir in the Grimsel area. Since the founding of the power plant company Oberhasli AG (KWO) in 1925 a complex power plant system with eleven power plants and eight reservoirs has been constructed. The KWO produces around 2350 gigawatt hours electricity per year, which is equivalent to 7 % of the production of all Swiss hydropower plants. This energy covers the annual consumption of around one million people.
