Point of interest
Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes

Montebello Curve

After the Morteratsch station, the terrain step had to be overcome with a loop blasted into the rock. The passage of the train with the Bernina massif in the background, at the open curve near Montebello with a radius of 45 meters and a gradient of 70‰, is probably the most photographed scene on the Bernina line.

Originally, the Bernina Railway was intended to follow the course of the road on the eastern slope above the valley stream, the Ova da Bernina. However, this plan was abandoned, likely due to the tourist development of the Morteratsch Glacier via the Morteratsch station. At the Montebello Curve, the road and railway tracks now intersect after all.
