Natural lake or artificial reservoir? Both! Until the end of the 19th century, there were still two natural lakes. Then came electricity and the possibility of transporting power over long distances – triggering a true boom in hydropower plants. Several power stations were built in Valposchiavo.
The two lakes on the Bernina Pass were connected. A unique feature: Lago Bianco has two dams, one in the south and one in the north. This allowed the two former lakes to be dammed and merged into one.
In the Palü and Cavaglia power plants, the water is used for the first round of electricity production. The result: clean, locally produced electricity that even carries the label 100% Valposchiavo.
An easy hiking trail around the lake allows visitors to explore its beauty.
