Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch

Mittellegi hut, Eigergletscher/Lauterbrunnen

The spectacular summits of the Jungfrau region attracted early mountain enthusiastic people from near and far. Significant milestones of the development of alpinism were set here. The Eiger was almost a myth. Its northern wall was long considered as impregnable. The success of the mountaineers who climbed the wall, moved the public just as much as the fate of those who failed. One of the crystallization points of the Eiger legend is the Mittellegi hut, which was built in 1924 on the northeast ridge of the Eiger. The sparsely furnished hut served generations of alpinists as a refuge. In 2001 it was replaced by a new building. The old cabin was flown by helicopter near to the Eiger glacier station. Today it is located at the Jungfrau-Eiger-Walk, the path from the Eiger glacier station down to  the Kleine Scheidegg, and gives passersby a close look at the harsh conditions on the Eiger.
