The importance of the railway line for the village is not immediately apparent. After all, the station is located outside the village, on a high plateau. However, this location was necessary due to the route design, to avoid excessive gradients.
Filisur station was already important in the early days of railway traffic, as Filisur was once a staging point. Locomotives were inspected here, or a second steam engine was added due to the steep incline of the route up to the Albula Tunnel. Even in the 1950s and 1960s, electric helper locomotives were still used here.
For early travelers, a buffet was available. And the forecourt with its row of trees leading toward the village allowed passengers to enjoy a popular promenade. These times are still recalled by the original station building from 1903 and – even after the station renovation in 2004 – a depot with turntable, an engine shed, and even a water crane for refueling steam locomotives.
Since 1909, the line from Davos also connects in Filisur, creating a circular route from Chur via Landquart, Davos, Filisur and back to Chur – the so-called carousel.
