The section between Muot and Preda is also known as the "Albula Railway Wonder". Indeed, the collection of spiral tunnels, valley crossings, and galleries is unique worldwide. These structures were necessary to artificially double the track length within the narrow valley step, allowing the maximum gradient and minimum curve radius to be maintained.
Four bridges between Bergün and Preda cross the Albula River and bear its name:
The Albula Viaduct I crosses the mountain stream for the first time, 500 meters after Muot. Length: 59 meters. Height: 11 meters.
To avoid the avalanche slope of “Val Rots,” the railway crosses the stream again—on the 95-meter-long and 29-meter-high Albula Viaduct II, as is often the case along this section.
Albula Viaduct III is made of more than 4'000 cubic meters of masonry and leads into the Maliera avalanche gallery. The scars from terrain modifications required for railway construction are no longer visible today.
Albula Viaduct IV is a good example of how efficiency and cost were already considered during railway construction. Many elements were standardized. Albula Viaduct IV has a twin in the Lochtobel Viaduct, and the arches of Albula Viaducts I and II were so typified that their exact dimensions could be taken directly from a table.
