World Heritage Days 2023: Abbey of St. Gall

The UNESCO World Heritage properties in Switzerland open their doors and invite you into the world of our Heritage with unique experiences! 

Would you like to learn more about UNESCO World Heritage in Switzerland? Follow in the footsteps of our Heritage on the weekend of 10th and 11th of June 2023! The World Heritage Days offer unique insights into the diverse natural and cultural treasures of Switzerland and allow views that are otherwise often denied to visitors.

Programme

On 11 June 2023, the Abbey of St. Gall will not only celebrate the famous World Heritage Days, but also 40 years as a UNESCO World Heritage property!  Under the theme "Guests in the Abbey", the following activities will be offered as part of these celebrations:

  • Musical prelude with the St. Gallen Singing School Choir.

  • Various free and unique guided tours and lectures on the theme of "Guests".

  • A special guided tour for children aged 6 and over

  • A World Heritage tent with information about the Abbey and as a place for exchange

  • Presentation of the short films "Pearls of the Abbey of St. Gall"

  • Culinary framed by the food truck "Geschmacksträger" next to the World Heritage tent and the "Klosterbistro by la focacceria".

 

Free guided tours

  • 14:00/15:00/16:00 - Guided tour for guests:
    With Abbey Librarian Cornel Dora, discover special features in the Abbey Library: the first record of the word "guest", the supernova 1006 and the Notker globe.

  • 13:30/15:30 - Guests in the Abbey Library:
    With the former deputy abbey librarian Karl Schmuki, get to know the famous visitors of the Abbey and curious anecdotes about them

  • 13:45/14:45 - Where state guests once dined:
    Delve into the exciting history of the Tafelzimmer in the government building with former Abbey archivist Lorenz Hollenstein. Lecture on his publication: "Tafelzimmer Speisesaal des Fürstabts".

  • 15:00/16:00 - Residential guests in the monastery:
    Get to know the hospitality in the monastery and the new exhibition in the exhibition hall with the monastery archivists Peter Erhart and Jakob Kuratli Hüeblin

  • 13:30-17:00 - Be our guest:
    Get into conversation with the cultural mediator Eva Dietrich at the World Heritage Tent and share your own experiences and wishes about the Abbey of St. Gall

  • 14:00/15:00/15:30 - Little guests in the big time: Children, children, there's something to discover here
    Guided tour for children from approx. 6-12 years of age

 

 

Remarks

Note that all tours start at the World Heritage Tent. One free ticket per person per guided tour can be purchased at the World Heritage Tent from 12:00 noon. The number of tickets is limited
