Niwärch Gorperi Suonen Trail

This trail takes you along the Suonen (irrigation channels) between Ausserberg and Eggerberg, through the quintessential rocky steppe of the inner Alpine southern slopes of Valais. There is so much to discover here, including the impressive Mediterranean flora and fauna, the «Maria Hilf» – a revered place of prayer – and the traditional Gorperi and Niwärch Suonen. It is only thanks to the bold building of these irrigation channels that the dry, south-facing slopes could be cultivated at all.

After setting out from Ausserberg, you first take the path up towards Niwärch. To continue into Baltschiedertal, take the thrilling footbridges of the Suonen; if you don't have a head for heights or are not sure-footed, it's better to take the tunnel. Once on the other side of the Baltschiederbach, you can follow the Gorperi to the Teiffe Bach, and then walk down to Eggerberg.

You can shorten the hike by taking the path along the Undra Suone back to Ausserberg.
