The Brusio Circular Viaduct

The route planners of the Bernina Railway, which crosses the Alps, were confronted with extreme challenges.

On its journey from St. Moritz (1,775 m a.s.l.) over the Bernina Pass (2,253 m a.s.l.) down to Tirano (429 m a.s.l.), the railway not only had to overcome large differences in altitude over short distances, but—as a tourist railway—it was also intended to manage with as few tunnels as possible. This difficult task was masterfully solved. Near Brusio, the Bernina Railway overcomes a terrain step by means of a circular viaduct in a double loop with a diameter of 100 meters: a rightly much-admired masterpiece of railway engineering!
