The highest peak of the Bernina massif is Piz Bernina, at 4,049 m a.s.l., and it is the only four‑thousand‑metre peak in the Eastern Alps. The mountain group stretches from the Bernina Pass in the east to the Muretto Pass in the west. The Bernina massif contains numerous glaciers.
For good reason, its magnificent summits are often referred to as the “ballroom of the Alps”: Piz Bernina and its neighbours – Piz Palü, Bellavista, Piz Zupò, to name just a few – present a truly majestic sight from every direction.
Located along the Swiss–Italian border, these mountains are popular destinations for many alpinists. The builders of the Bernina Railway chose the route so that this impressive mountain world could be comfortably admired from the train.
