Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch

Gelmer Funicular

The steepest funicular railway in Europe operates in Guttannen. The Gelmer railway shows at its steepest point a fabulous gradient of maximum 106 %. The spectacularly inclined lift goes from the Handeck to the Lake Gelmer, overcoming on a distance of 1028 meters a height difference of 450 m. The plant was built in 1926 as works lift for the construction of the Lake Gelmer dam. Since the total renovation in 2001, it serves also as public transport. Thus the Lake Gelmer, which can be surrounded in around 2 hours by foot, became easily accessible for hikers. The open waggons of the Gelmer funicular provide an unhindered panoramic view to the surrounding mountains. Particularly impressive is the view down to the Aare valley during the descent.
