Programme

Sunday, 15 June 2025

The Convent of St. John in Müstair is celebrating a special anniversary on this year's World Heritage Days: 1250 years have passed since the beginnings of the convent complex. Since then, the monastery has been continuously inhabited, currently by eight Benedictine nuns. It tells a unique story that has been characterised by changes over the centuries.

Visitors are invited to go on a journey through the history of the convent. Numerous special guided tours bring different eras to life:

📌 Prehistory & the Middle Ages - archaeology in the cultural heritage conservation area
📌 Early Middle Ages - the Carolingian Chapel of the Holy Cross
📌 Romanesque period - the famous mural painting ‘The Dance of Salome’
📌 Middle Ages & Baroque - art history in the church and museum
📌 Baroque - organ music from the monastery archive in the Holy Cross Chapel
📌 Historicism - textile treasures from the 19th century
📌 Contemporary - the Benedictine nuns of today and their favourite object

Special highlight:
A concert with Marian Polin, who plays ‘Baroque organ music from the monastery archives’ on his table organ, will conclude the World Heritage Day programme.
