Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes

Spinas Station

Val Bever. Alpine meadows alternate with stone pine and larch forests, while the Beverin river leaps through the valley toward the Engadin. Since 1903, the Albula Railway has accompanied the river.

Due to avalanche risk, the tracks were built on an embankment here — using the excavated material from the Albula Tunnel, just as in Preda.

A railway heritage gem in Val Bever is Spinas Station, which has remained almost unchanged and features a unique characteristic. While the station buildings on the northern side of the Albula line were constructed in timber, those on the southern side are made of plastered rubble stone. Not so in Spinas: its wooden-clad station building still evokes the style of many stations north of the Alps.
