Il Spir viewing platform - view of the Flims landslide landscape

The Flims landslide is the largest landslide in the Alps. An estimated 9450 years ago, around 10 cubic kilometers of rock thundered down to the valley. We do not know what exactly triggered the landslide, but the effects must have been felt far into the lowlands. Besides the Flims landslide, there are many other forms of erosion in the region, such as the removal of rock material by glaciers.

It is only because of the Flims landslide that we can enjoy the view of the unique Rhine Gorge today. The site of the landslide is at about 2,700 m above sea level, Flims at about 1,100 m and the filled-in glacial trough valley at about 600 m.

The resulting landslide landscape attracts visitors with fairy-tale lakes and enchanting forests interspersed with landslide boulders. The viewing platform Il Spir near Conn offers an impressive "deep view" into the Rhine gorge. A romantic hike from Flims, past turquoise blue lakes (Cresta or Cauma lakes) leads you through magical forests to the viewing platform.
