Around 11,000 years ago, during the Ice Age, the Palü Glacier at the foot of the Bernina massif carved huge holes into the bedrock. Some of the glacier mills at Cavaglia – also known as “giant’s pots” – are ten metres deep and five metres wide. They remained unnoticed and hidden for a long time, filled with soil and overgrown by vegetation. Today, volunteers ensure that the pots remain open.
This impressive natural phenomenon along the UNESCO World Heritage Bernina Railway fascinates both adults and children alike. The Puntalta gorge has also been made accessible, allowing visitors to experience the power of water at close range. The well‑developed glacier garden is only a short walk from Cavaglia station. It is open at all times, but guided tours are also available.
