Programme suggestion to discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch" in one day.
10:00 - 11:00 UNESCO Information Centre in Grimsel World
The starting point for this World Heritage experience is the Alpinhotel Grimsel Hospiz. It not only houses the Visitor Centre and the exhibition on the "Spitallamm Dam Replacement" project but also serves as a meeting point for guided tours of the power station. The latter must be booked in advance.
11:00 - 14:00 Mountain railway safari Grimselwelt
The Sidelhornbahn, one of eight cable cars used for tourism activities, starts at the Grimsel Hospiz. After a short ascent from the top station, a small oasis in the form of a natural lake with a seating area and stunning panoramic views open up before you continue on to the Husegg Hut. Then the scenery changes and you move deeper into the UNESCO World Heritage property on a high plateau, spotting its highest peak, the Finsteraarhorn (4274m). The scenery is impressive: here is the spring landscape with its specialised flora, the rugged flanks, the glacier polish and the jagged mountain ridges. Next to it the glistening glaciers and the deep blue Lake Trübten, a masterpiece of nature.
Good to know: The season in Grimselwelt begins with the opening of the pass at the beginning of June and ends in October.
14:00 - 16:00 Bärner Rösti at Berghaus Oberaar with a view of the UNESCO World Heritage
Once you have reached the Oberaar reservoir, further highlights await you: The Bernese Rösti in the Berghaus and the impressive landscape! The mountain restaurant Oberaar, at 2350 metres above sea level, is the perfect place to enjoy the sun. The menu offers everything from snacks to main courses, from snacks to desserts.
You can also experience the ice of the glaciers up close and have a fantastic view from above of the water masses of the reservoir. You have the unique chance to move around in the panorama of the very highest Bernese and Valais mountain peaks! It is definitely worth taking the time to marvel at this fascinating and diverse UNESCO World Heritage property.
16:00 - Return to low altitude
Finally, take the "Alpentiefflug" with magnificent views back to the hospice on the Oberaarbahn, open to visitors since 2021.
