An abbey like St.Gallen was not only an important spiritual and cultural centre, but also an equally important economic centre. The monastery employed many lay people, and a monastery fulfilled needs that are covered today by the state and private entrepreneurs. The guided tour explains the economic administration and development of the abbey on the basis of charters and other documents, it provides insight into natural interests and the importance of the abbey archives. It becomes clear that a monastery was as much an insurance agency as a place of salvation.
